Guangzhou Storage Hydropower Plant (referred to as Guangzhou Storage Power Plant), affiliated to China Southern Power Grid’s peak regulation and frequency regulation power generation company, is located in Conghua, Guangzhou, which is famous for its “hot springs and lychees”, and is 120 kilometers away from Guangzhou. With a total installed capacity of 2,400MW, Guangshu Power Plant is the first pumped-storage project with high head and large capacity designed and constructed by my country itself, and it is also the largest pumped-storage power plant in the world.
The Guangshou Power Plant Project consists of the upper reservoir, the lower reservoir, the water diversion system, the underground powerhouse caverns, and the outlet yard. The natural drop between the upper and lower reservoirs is more than 500 meters.
The entire project is constructed in two phases, with eight 300MW reversible pumped storage units installed, with a design head of 535 meters and a design overall efficiency of 76%. The project started on May 25, 1989, and the first unit generated electricity on June 29, 1993, and was fully completed in June 2000. In the process of project construction, Guangshou Power Plant took the lead in implementing “owner responsibility system”, “bidding and bidding system” and “construction supervision system” in China. In order to summarize and popularize the experience and achievements in project construction, in January 1991 and June 1995, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Electric Power held two conferences on project construction management experience in Guangshou Power Plant.
